The MR‑Linac is an advanced type of radiotherapy machine. It combines radiotherapy with high‑quality MRI imaging, which means we can see the tumour more clearly during treatment. This may help us treat the cancer more accurately while protecting healthy tissues.
The MIDSECTION study is a research project looking at whether it is practical and comfortable for patients to receive a type of precise radiotherapy called SABR (stereotactic ablative body radiotherapy) using the MR‑Linac. This study focuses on tumours in the chest and abdomen, including both primary cancers and cancers that have spread (metastases).
What taking part involvesPatients whose cancer is in one of the areas being studied may be offered treatment on the MR‑Linac as part of this research. If you take part, you may also be invited to:
- Have some extra MRI scans
- Provide optional blood samples
- Provide an optional stool (poo) sample
These extra tests are completely optional.
What the study is trying to find outThe main aim is to see:
- Whether treating these tumours with MR‑guided SABR is feasible (practical to deliver)
- Whether patients find this treatment tolerable and manageable
The study will help us understand how well the MR‑Linac works for cancers in the abdomen and chest, and whether it could improve accuracy and outcomes for future patients.
